Sonic The Hedgehog

Secret to Success: Sonic was the first game to put real speed into a game. Sega called this speed technique "Blast Processing", which meant little more than scrolling the background by really, really fast. Long gone were the slow stops and starts of the Mario era, Sonic reproduced slash, brilliance, and "attitude". Sonic is still the only video game character that doesn't appear cheezy, which is amazing since he was going up against Mario, a figure more recognized than Mickey Mouse at the time.

Memorable Moments: The first time I got breakneck speed in the Starlight Zone was simply amazing. Things were going by so fast that I didn't know what was going on. The best part was hitting a jump. Sonic gets thrust into the air and you're off the screen, his little legs still chugging, probably in orbit for a couple seconds, before you come back down and have no clue how far you just traveled.
