Secret to Success:
Back in the late 80's, early 90's, shooters ruled. There were probably as many shooters back then as there are fighting games today. R-Type, in my mind, still rules the pack. While not as all out as Gaiares was, it was insanely challenging, yet not impossible. Half the reason this was is because of the constant flicker you had to put up with. Being a die hard fan of this game, that was half the fun. At the time, this game represented state of the art graphics and game play that is still enjoyable. And having one stage where the entire level is the boss itself never hurt much either.

Memorable Moments:
Getting the all time world high score, and the controversy that surrounded it. In issue #7 of EGM, I made the top of the list with my high score. Later on, EGM published that someone had beaten me. I couldn't believe it so I tried to regain the high score but couldn't. Why? Because it was basically impossible to get any higher of a score than what I had, certainly not as high as what EGM was claiming this fellow had. Still, if you pick up a copy of Video Games All Time High Scores, there I am, at number 2.
