Ah, finally. We have a winner in the "name that video game" contest. It was submitted by Matt Kohout (aka Phlappes). The character hanging from the ropes in the intro to the Top 25 is from Donkey Kong 3. Many people guessed Donkey Kong or Donkey Kong Jr, and like I said, it was a little harder than that.
